Freelancing in Indonesia

Indonesia's freelance market splits in two. Freelancers on Sribu, Projects.co.id and Fastwork work with local clients in rupiah and search in Bahasa Indonesia; freelancers on Upwork and Fiverr work in English and are paid in dollars. This English page is for the second group, and an Indonesian-language version of the core tools is on the way. The rate calculator below is set to rupiah.

Getting paid in Indonesia

Local clients pay by bank transfer, which is the default on almost every Indonesian invoice. E-wallets such as GoPay, DANA and OVO dominate everyday payments but are used for small informal jobs rather than formal invoices. Foreign clients pay through Wise (usually the cheapest), PayPal (convenient, higher fees) or Payoneer (built into Fiverr), all settling into a rupiah bank account; moving that money into an e-wallet means withdrawing to the bank first. Compare the routes in the payment fee comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Do I put my NPWP on invoices?

Yes. Corporate clients need it to process their own withholding and expense records, and an invoice without it is often sent back.

What is the 0.5 percent final tax?

A simplified regime for turnover under Rp4.8 billion: 0.5 percent of gross monthly turnover, no expense bookkeeping, first Rp500 million exempt. Independent professions listed by the tax office are excluded and pay progressive rates.

What is e-meterai and when do I need it?

An electronic stamp duty of Rp10,000 required on civil documents, including invoices and contracts, that state a value above Rp5,000,000. Skipping it carries a 100 percent penalty.

Which foreign payment method is cheapest?

Wise is usually the lowest total cost because it converts at the mid-market rate. PayPal costs more but connects to more services. Put your typical invoice into the fee comparison tool.
