Freelancing in the United Kingdom
The UK is the second-largest client market for freelance work and a large supplier of it. Registration and tax run through HMRC's Self Assessment, and the VAT threshold is the number most freelancers watch. This page covers the structure, with a rate calculator in pounds.
At a glance
| Currency | GBP (£) |
|---|---|
| Getting paid | Faster Payments or BACS for UK clients; Wise, PayPal or Payoneer from abroad into a pound account. |
| Where the work is | Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer.com, plus PeoplePerHour, which was founded in the UK and has a strong domestic base, and Toptal for specialist work. |
| Registration | A sole trader registers for Self Assessment with HMRC, generally by 5 October after the tax year in which trading started, and receives a Unique Taxpayer Reference. |
| Income tax and National Insurance | Profit is taxed at the normal income tax bands through Self Assessment. Class 4 National Insurance applies to profits above the lower limit at a main rate of 6 percent. Class 2 stopped being compulsory in April 2024, with voluntary payment still available to protect state pension years. |

| Filing | Annual Self Assessment, due online by 31 January for the tax year ending the previous 5 April, with the balance and first payment on account due the same day. Quarterly VAT returns under Making Tax Digital if registered. |

Frequently asked questions
When do I have to register with HMRC?
By 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you started trading. Registering earlier avoids a rush before the January deadline.
Should I register for VAT before £90,000?
If most of your clients are VAT-registered businesses, voluntary registration lets you reclaim VAT on your costs at no cost to them. If your clients are consumers or small businesses, it makes you 20 percent more expensive. Decide on your client mix.
How much should I set aside for tax?
Income tax at your band plus 6 percent Class 4 National Insurance on profits above the lower limit, and remember payments on account. Use the simple mode of the tax set-aside calculator; its US mode does not apply here.
Can I charge interest on late payments?
Yes. UK law gives businesses a statutory right to interest at 8 percent above the Bank of England base rate on late commercial payments, plus a fixed compensation amount. The late payment calculator works it out.
