Getting paid in Nigeria

Flutterwave is the most-used local service, accepting card and bank payments in many currencies and paying out by transfer, card or USSD. Payoneer is common too, either converting to naira automatically or paying into a domiciliary (foreign-currency) account at banks such as GTBank or Zenith so you can hold dollars and convert when the rate suits you. Newer dollar-wallet apps compete on the naira conversion rate. The payment fee comparison lets you put each route's real fee and markup side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Should I open a domiciliary account?

If you are paid in dollars regularly, yes. It lets you hold the currency and convert when you choose instead of accepting whatever rate applies on the day the money lands.

A client withheld 10 percent. Is that money gone?

No. Withholding tax paid at source is credited against your annual personal income tax. Keep the withholding receipt.

Do I need to register for VAT?

Only once turnover passes ₦25 million a year, unless you fall into a professional category that must register anyway. Check with the Nigeria Revenue Service.

Which service gives the best naira rate?

It changes week to week. Compare the quoted rate against the mid-market rate and count the fee too; the fee comparison tool makes that arithmetic quick.
