Freelancing in India

India supplies more online freelance work than any other country. Most of it is paid in dollars or pounds and lands in a rupee bank account, which is why payment rails and tax rules are the two questions Indian freelancers ask most. This page covers both at a structural level, with a rate calculator set to rupees.

Getting paid in India

Payoneer, PayPal and Wise are the three channels most Indian freelancers use, and all of them settle into an Indian bank account. Payoneer gives you virtual USD, GBP and EUR account details that clients can pay like a local transfer, then withdraws to your bank in rupees in two to three days. Wise converts at the mid-market rate and usually settles in one to two days. PayPal is accepted everywhere but has the highest fees and the worst exchange rate of the three. A SWIFT wire from the client's bank works for large invoices and is the most expensive option for small ones. Compare what actually reaches your account with the payment fee comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need GST registration to work for foreign clients?

Only once your turnover crosses the threshold. Below it, registration is optional. Above it, export of services is zero-rated, so you register, file a Letter of Undertaking, and invoice at 0 percent rather than charging IGST and claiming it back.

What is the 44ADA scheme?

A presumptive taxation option for eligible professions. You declare half of your gross receipts as taxable profit without keeping detailed accounts, for receipts up to ₹75 lakh. Check with the Income Tax Department or a chartered accountant whether your profession qualifies.

Which payment method loses the least?

For most people Wise or Payoneer beat PayPal on total cost once the exchange-rate markup is counted. Put your real figures into the fee comparison tool; the best option depends on the amount and the currency.

Should I invoice in rupees or dollars?

Invoice in the client's currency if they insist, but ask for dollars or the client's currency to be converted by a low-markup service on your side. Whatever you choose, state the currency and the payment method on the invoice.
